On January 1, 2004 Federal and Provincial Privacy Laws came into effect obliging all organizations that maintain personal information as digital data, to implement protective measures to secure such information. These regulations pertain to the scope of the information, how it is used and protected. In accordance with these laws, only data that is essential for the operation of business can be maintained, and this data must be protected by policy and technology to provide absolute security from unauthorized access, through measures that identify and report on any attempted or actual access violations.

Management's responsibilities are; compliance with current and emerging privacy initiatives that require a clear understanding of legal obligations, an organizations IT infrastructure as well as the ability to interpret and apply policy objectives.
